At SEA Games 33, coach Kim Sang Sik has several talented overseas Vietnamese players such as Viktor Lê, Thành Trung, and Vadim Nguyễn in his roster.
Vietnamese football has recently become more vibrant than ever with a mix of overseas Vietnamese and naturalized players. With a trend towards youth, many mixed-heritage players have returned home, showing strong determination to contribute to the national team.
For the upcoming SEA Games 33, coach Kim Sang Sik is expected to have a squad filled with highly promising overseas Vietnamese players.
The first name mentioned is Viktor Lê, who is considered the brightest prospect of the U22 Vietnam team at present. Before SEA Games 33, Viktor had been called up at least five times to various U22/U23 Vietnam squads, participating in numerous friendly and official tournaments.
Through continuous training camps, coach Kim Sang Sik has gained a thorough understanding of Viktor’s abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, while the young midfielder has also matured tactically and adapted well to the team’s playing style. Additionally, Viktor Lê has maintained very stable form for Hong Linh Ha Tinh this season. On match day October 31, Viktor provided an assist and scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Hanoi FC. He is expected to be a crucial piece in U22 Vietnam’s midfield at the upcoming SEA Games.
Besides Viktor Lê, two other players attracting attention are Trần Thành Trung (Ninh Binh) and Vadim Nguyễn (Da Nang). Both were called up to the U23 Vietnam squad in October and are regarded as having great development potential. Recently, Thành Trung made an impressive V-League debut, while Vadim Nguyễn has been regularly given playing opportunities by coach Lê Đức Tuấn, helping him quickly gain experience and adapt.
The encouraging fact is that all three players have obtained Vietnamese citizenship, making them eligible to represent the national teams.
However, to compete for positions against established domestic players like Văn Khang, Văn Trường, or Phi Hoàng, these overseas Vietnamese players still need to put in greater effort.
