The Premier League organizers have officially confirmed the fixture schedule for the 2025 year-end holiday period, highlighting a notable change: MU and Newcastle will be the only match taking place on Boxing Day (26/12) — representing a major shift from the long-held traditions of English football.
According to the latest announcement, December 26 this year falls on a Friday, and just one match will be held on that day — MU hosting Newcastle at Old Trafford, kicking off at 8:00 PM local time, broadcast live on Sky Sports.
On their official website, Manchester United also posted a statement: "The match between Manchester United and Newcastle United will be the only Premier League fixture on Boxing Day, a day traditionally linked with English football heritage."
This will be the fourth time in Premier League history that these two teams meet on Boxing Day, with MU having won all three previous encounters.
The remainder of the round will be spread over the following three days — Saturday, Sunday, and Monday — following a typical "weekend round" format.
Only one match will take place on December 26, 2025: MU hosting Newcastle at Old Trafford.
In response to fans’ debates about having only one match on Boxing Day, the Premier League organizers issued an official statement explaining: "The Premier League fully recognizes the exceptional circumstances leading to the reduction of fixtures on Boxing Day — an important tradition in English football. The expansion of European competitions has impacted domestic scheduling, forcing us to adjust the season, resulting in only 33 official league weekends this season, fewer than in previous years."
The statement also confirmed that Boxing Day 2026 (falling on a Saturday) will feature more matches to restore the traditional atmosphere. "We are committed to ensuring more reasonable rest periods for players during this busy phase. Clubs will have at least 60 hours of rest between rounds 18, 19, and 20 — to aid recovery and reduce injury risks."
Although the reduction of matches on December 26 disappointed many fans, the new schedule still promises exciting contests — especially major clashes like Arsenal vs Liverpool, Chelsea vs Aston Villa, and Manchester United vs Newcastle.
The Christmas and New Year period will remain the most intense phase of the Premier League season, where every mistake can alter the title race dynamics.
