WTT Montpellier Championship Report! Women's Singles Quarterfinalists Revealed, 2 Seats for China, Wang Yidi and Chen Yi Win Narrowly

On November 1st Beijing time, the women's singles round of 16 at the WTT Montpellier Championship ended. In three closely watched matches, China's key player Wang Yidi battled through five sets to narrowly beat Bruna 3-2, and newcomer Chen Yi similarly won 3-2 over Polkanova in a five-set thriller. Meanwhile, Mima Ito, leading 2-0, nearly faltered but still secured a 3-2 victory against Pavade. Thus, the women's singles quarterfinal lineup was set: China has two players advancing—Wang Yidi and Chen Yi; Japan also has two players—Honoka Hashimoto and Mima Ito; the other four are Doo Hoi Kem, Winter, Zhu Qianxi, and Shin Yu-bin!

China only had four participants in the women's singles this time, with two advancing past the first round and both pushing for the quarterfinals in the round of 16. Wang Yidi faced Brazilian player Bruna and started off somewhat passive but rallied from a 1-2 deficit to win 3-2. Chen Yi went up against Polkanova in a rollercoaster match; although Chen lost the first set, she won two consecutive sets to take the lead. Polkanova fought back to even the score, but Chen managed to pull through in the decisive set, winning 3-2. As a result, both Chinese players advanced to the women's singles quarterfinals!

Japanese star Mima Ito faced French player Pavade. Ito aggressively attacked from the start, storming to a 2-0 lead and reaching match point. However, Pavade did not collapse and mounted an incredible comeback, winning two consecutive sets to tie 2-2. In the final set, Ito refocused and dominated with overwhelming control, winning by a large margin to clinch the match 3-2 and prevent an upset!

With that, all eight spots for the women's singles quarterfinals are confirmed. Overall, the distribution is very balanced, with China, Japan, and South Korea each having two representatives. The quarterfinal matchups are set: defensive specialist Honoka Hashimoto will face Zhu Qianxi in a Japan-China clash; Hong Kong's Doo Hoi Kem will battle Germany's Winter; Chinese player Wang Yidi will face Japanese star Mima Ito in a challenging match; and Chen Yi will take on South Korea's Shin Yu-bin. We look forward to seeing who will reach the semifinals—stay tuned!
