In an exclusive talkSPORT interview, former Manchester United legend Steve Bruce placed Ruben Amorim on the same level as Mikel Arteta, suggesting Amorim is rebuilding Manchester United in a similar way to how Arteta has restructured Arsenal.
After a difficult start to the season, Manchester United are beginning to enjoy success under Ruben Amorim. In October, United secured three consecutive wins against Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton. This streak has helped the ‘Red Devils’ climb to 6th place in the 2025/26 Premier League, with 16 points from 9 matches.
This strong revival at Manchester United has had a positive impact, especially among the club’s former legends. Recently, Steve Bruce (a United legend) publicly praised the team’s improvement under Amorim’s leadership.
According to Steve Bruce, Manchester United’s transformation is not just about results but also about Amorim’s bold decisions in the dressing room. The 40-year-old coach is willing to drop numerous star players to restore order, something few dare to do at a club with United’s rich history. Since taking charge, Amorim has excluded several high-profile names such as Marcus Rashford, Andre Onana, Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, and Antony, all previously considered key to the club’s future.
On talkSPORT, Steve Bruce commented:
“Amorim has had a fantastic few weeks with Manchester United winning 5 of their last 7 games. Clearly, United’s form has improved significantly. I believe the two new signings, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, have truly made a difference. They integrated immediately and brought sharpness to the attack, something the team lacked for a while.
I must say, Amorim made a very bold choice in the dressing room by dropping big-name, well-known players. It reminds me of Arsenal under Arteta, when he dared to clear out the dressing room, and people said ‘wow, that’s a major decision.’ Amorim is following a similar path.”
Bruce’s comparison is quite reasonable. When Mikel Arteta first arrived at Arsenal, he also made tough decisions by removing several key players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, and Matteo Guendouzi. Despite skepticism, Arteta remained committed to his philosophy and received patience from Arsenal’s management.
After winning the FA Cup in his first season, the Spanish coach finished 8th in the next two campaigns but gradually brought the team closer to the top. In the last three seasons, Arsenal consistently finished as Premier League runners-up and reached the Champions League semi-finals, a deserved reward for sustainable development.
Steve Bruce is confident that Ruben Amorim can replicate that journey at Manchester United if he continues to receive trust:
“I think all United fans like Amorim. Everyone wants him to succeed because, after all, he is a decent person and an extremely talented coach.
All the talk about ‘will Amorim change tactics, will he alter his approach’ is clearly not the case. Amorim stays true to his path, and the management supports that.”
And of course, the most important thing is that Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently publicly stated that if Amorim needs time, he is willing to give him up to three years. That is a major turning point.”
Currently, Manchester United are about to face Nottingham Forest in the 10th round of the 2025/26 Premier League. This match will be a strong test to see if Manchester United have truly returned as Steve Bruce claims, especially since United have lost their last three matches against Nottingham Forest.
