MU goalkeeper responds coolly when compared to the legend

Shining in Manchester United’s victory, young goalkeeper Senne Lammens thrilled supporters who likened him to the iconic Schmeichel, yet he modestly affirmed his sole desire is to serve the club.

The young keeper Senne Lammens has become the most talked-about name at Manchester United after impressive performances. Joining from Royal Antwerp, the 23-year-old quickly won fans’ hearts with his consistent form and rare composure between the posts.

In the 2-0 win over Sunderland, MU’s first clean sheet of the season, fans at Old Trafford sang loudly in unison: “Are you Schmeichel in disguise?” (Are you Schmeichel in disguise?). These praises recall the legendary Peter Schmeichel, who was an iconic figure guarding the “Red Devils” goal from 1991 to 1999.

However, Lammens modestly rejected all comparisons. He told BBC Sport: “I saw that video after the match. It’s a great compliment, but I’m not Schmeichel. I’m just Senne Lammens, trying to help the team. He’s one of the greatest goalkeepers ever, and I still have a lot to prove before being mentioned alongside him.”

Joining MU on the last day of the summer transfer window, Lammens was not used immediately. Coach Ruben Amorim wanted him to have more time to adapt before giving him the starting spot. After weeks of hard training, Lammens was put on in the Sunderland match and quickly proved his worth. “The coach gave me time to settle in, and that was the right decision. When the chance came, I just tried to seize it, and everything went very well,” he added.

The Belgian goalkeeper also commended center-backs Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt, who helped him integrate quickly. “They told me I didn’t need to be a special goalkeeper, just show up at the right moments to give the team confidence. That made me much more confident.”

In conclusion, Lammens expressed his hope to stay long-term at MU and build his own legacy: “I hope that one day, when my career ends, I’ll be mentioned alongside names like Schmeichel, Van der Sar, or De Gea. But for now, I’m focused on giving my best for the team.”
