Manchester United had a tough time earning a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, yet the most talked-about moment was their disputed first goal.

Nottingham Forest’s head coach, Sean Dyche, sharply criticized referee Darren England and his assistants after they awarded Man United a corner kick that led to Casemiro’s opening goal.

In a fairly balanced first half, Man United took the lead when Bruno Fernandes delivered a corner that Casemiro headed into the net. However, Dyche and Forest fans were furious, believing the corner should not have been given.

Video footage suggests Nicolo Savona successfully kept the ball from crossing the line, but the assistant referee on the opposite side raised his flag, signaling the ball was out, resulting in a corner for the Red Devils.

In a post-match statement to Sky Sports Dyche expressed his frustration: “I reviewed the incident. There were two serious wrong decisions against us. They awarded a corner when the ball hadn’t gone out. The same thing happened last week and now it’s happened again. It’s a poor decision.”

The English manager added: “Situations like this have a huge impact. We are fighting hard for every point to improve our league standing.”

Nevertheless, Forest mounted a strong comeback after the break. Morgan Gibbs-White equalized with a beautiful header, and shortly after, Savona scored a close-range finish to put the hosts ahead 2-1, sending City Ground into a frenzy. Yet, Man United managed to salvage a point when Amad Diallo struck a precise volley in the 81st minute to seal a thrilling 2-2 draw.

Despite leaving with a point, Man United faced heavy criticism. Many experts and fans accused the officiating team, especially the assistant referee, of guessing wrongly on the play that led to the opening goal.

This draw allows coach Amorim’s team to maintain their unbeaten streak but also exposes ongoing issues in attack and reliance on luck. In the next round, Man United will face a tough away game at Tottenham Hotspur before the final international break of 2025.
