Milan - Roma: Allegri has defeated Conte, but what about Gasperini?

A month ago, Milan defeated the reigning champions Napoli 2-1 at San Siro in a match where coach Max Allegri outmaneuvered his talented counterpart Antonio Conte. However, that was the last time Milan showed convincing form, because in their last four games, although unbeaten (one win, three draws), they have exhibited some negative signs.

Milan is currently engulfed in a manpower crisis due to numerous injuries, coinciding with a very demanding schedule against tough opponents. Ardon Jashari and Pervis Estupinan have returned to training but will definitely not be able to play in the early November 3rd match against Roma. On the other hand, both Rafael Leao and Fikayo Tomori have fitness concerns and might also miss out, leaving Milan with only 17 available players for the big game against the team sharing the top spot with Napoli. The bench, which previously had seven players, now risks shrinking to six, including two backup goalkeepers.

Leao’s problem adds more trouble for Allegri. Despite inconsistent form, the 26-year-old forward remains a vital part of Milan’s playing style. His substitute in the draw against Atalanta, Christopher Nkunku, was extremely ineffective, barely connecting with his teammates. Meanwhile, main striker Santiago Gimenez has played over 600 minutes recently without scoring or assisting, making him the least productive attacker among the top five European leagues this season. Without players like Leao who can create chances or open spaces, the Mexican striker’s chances of scoring will be even more limited.

Will Allegri or Gasperini win at San Siro?

While Allegri feels least confident about his attack at the moment, defense is where Gian Piero Gasperini is most proud. After nine rounds, Roma has conceded only four goals, just one more than Arsenal among the top five major leagues. Comparing Mancini, Celik, Ndicka, Hermoso with stars like Gabriel, Saliba, Timber, and Calafiori reveals how well Gasperini has done, even though he had to abandon his usual fiery attacking style to adapt to the circumstances at his new club.

This is a must-win match for Milan if they want to compete for the Scudetto, as they currently trail Roma and Napoli by three points. To win, they must score, which is very challenging, and also tighten a defense that has weakened in recent games. The experience and skill of the coach carry great value, as when Allegri defeated Conte or Conte beat Chivu, but it may not always be decisive, as when Gasperini lost to Chivu. The tactical duel between two of Serie A’s most experienced managers (alongside Conte) will be very unpredictable.
