Coach Arne Slot acknowledged that his players “rose at the right moment” as Liverpool ended their winless streak with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield.
Before hosting Aston Villa, The Reds had gone through 4 consecutive Premier League matches without a win in the Premier League. However, they regained their spirit with an impressive performance, Mohamed Salah scoring his 250th goal for the club, while Ryan Gravenberch also found the net on his comeback from injury.
This win gives Liverpool confidence heading into the big clash against Real Madrid in the Champions League next week, where Trent Alexander-Arnold and Xabi Alonso will return to Anfield, before facing Manchester City at the weekend.
Speaking after the match, Slot showed relief that the team’s 4-game losing streak had come to an end. He told TNT Sports: “I think everyone felt the importance of this game, both the players and the fans. The players really showed their quality.”
“In recent matches, we often conceded within minutes, but this time, even though Villa had a dangerous chance when the ball hit the post, the whole team stayed strong. Both the crowd and players felt: this is the moment to prove that we are still here.”
After leading Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season in charge, Arne Slot is now facing his first challenge as the team dropped to 9th place. However, with the win over Villa, they climbed back into the Top 3. The Dutch coach admitted:
“This might be the first time I’ve faced a real difficulty as a manager. In the Premier League, everything is very tight. Today, we were on the winning side, but previous matches were lost by narrow margins. Top-level football is like that; you always have to find ways to cross that fine line.”
Slot also took time to discuss the importance of set pieces, which have become a “weapon” in every Premier League match. He added: “We must clearly recognize what we have done well and what needs improvement. In some previous games, the team conceded silly goals. The biggest difference today was that we didn’t concede from set pieces. That’s very important because it seems that in today’s Premier League, any match can be decided by such moments.”
With this victory, Liverpool not only regained confidence but also reaffirmed their fighting spirit, a positive sign ahead of a tough series of matches both domestically and in Europe.
Van Dijk: 'From what I hear, it sounds like Liverpool is about to be relegated!' After a disappointing run of form, defender Virgil van Dijk strongly defended Liverpool, calling the criticism against the team “unreasonable” and affirming that the entire squad maintains the highest fighting spirit.
