Inter Milan claimed a nail-biting 2-1 win against Verona thanks to a stoppage-time goal, helping coach Cristian Chivu’s squad stay in the top tier of Serie A and prove their strength as title contenders.
Inter Milan continued their impressive Serie A run by clinching a dramatic 2-1 away win over Hellas Verona. The decisive goal in injury time enabled coach Cristian Chivu’s side to hold onto first place and affirm their status as genuine title challengers.
After the match, coach Chivu openly shared his emotions: “We knew how to endure and overcome tough moments. Verona is a very well-organized team, playing at a high intensity and causing many challenges for our defense. This kind of match is one where you’re more likely to lose than win, because a single lapse in concentration can be costly. But Inter showed resilience and a hunger for victory until the very last minute.”
The Romanian tactician humorously recalled the celebration moment: “I slipped while running to celebrate, ruining my suit, and the assistants teased me about it. But with that feeling, it was worth sacrificing a suit.”
Chivu also revealed that Zielinski’s winning goal came from a pre-planned free-kick routine: “Angelo Palombo, my assistant, suggested that free-kick. At first, I was hesitant because I feared a counterattack, but with players like Calhanoglu and Zielinski, you have to take the risk. We are a team that always learns and experiments to make a difference.”
When asked about captain Lautaro Martínez’s form, coach Chivu responded firmly: “Lautaro didn’t score for a week? He just found the net in Brussels. A quiet week can’t be considered a ‘problem’. He is a leader and an inspiration for the whole team.”
Midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu also expressed his satisfaction: “Playing in Verona is always tough, but we gave our all. I’ve trained a lot on set pieces, and today that effort brought us the victory.”
Meanwhile, the match hero Zielinski added: “We only practiced that routine once, and it worked perfectly. Chivu is a fantastic coach who always knows how to motivate the entire team.”
