Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has stated that he will forever hold affection and appreciation for Liverpool, no matter the fans' response upon his return to Anfield.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is likely to feature in Real Madrid's lineup after recovering from a hamstring injury. Fate has brought Alexander-Arnold back to Anfield just a few months after a transfer that upset Liverpool supporters. Many believe he will face a hostile reception when he plays against Liverpool with Real Madrid in the Champions League qualifying round.
Speaking to Prime Video Sport before the match, Alexander-Arnold said: “When the draw was announced, I think everyone felt it was almost destined. It’s hard to describe the emotions at that moment. Liverpool is a top club, so I knew it was only a matter of time before facing them. That it happened so soon brought a mix of feelings. Certainly, it will be a very challenging game, but also one I am very eager to take part in.”
The English star confirmed he will not celebrate if he scores against his former club and expressed his utmost respect for Liverpool fans: “How I am received is up to the fans. They have the right to show their emotions. As for me, I will always love the club, always be a Liverpool supporter. I am grateful for the opportunities I had, for the trophies and moments we shared, all of which will stay with me forever.
No matter what happens, my feelings for Liverpool will never change. The memories there are something I will treasure for life, and regardless of how people react, that affection remains unchanged.”
Moving to Real Madrid reunited Alexander-Arnold with his England teammate Jude Bellingham, who he admitted played a significant role in persuading him to join the Bernabeu. However, Trent emphasized that Jude was not the main reason: “There were many rumors about Jude convincing me to come to Real this summer. That’s not true. Since his first season at Madrid, whenever we met during England call-ups, everyone was curious about how things were there.
Jude said it’s a fantastic environment, unlike anywhere else he’s seen such a winning mentality and strong hunger for success. He spoke very positively about Real, and in the end, I felt I needed a change, a new challenge both on and off the pitch. That’s why I joined Real.”
