Barcelona is understood to know that Harry Kane will only make his decision about joining the Catalan club after the current season finishes.
Hansi Flick’s team recently regained joy in victory by beating Elche 3–1, following a 1–2 defeat in the "El Clásico" against Real Madrid at the end of October. However, Barcelona still trails their biggest rival by 5 points in the La Liga table.
If Hansi Flick cannot help Barca win the La Liga title this season, the board is reportedly set to continue strongly supporting him in the next summer transfer window. The club’s top priority is to bolster the attack, especially since Robert Lewandowski is 37 and there are no signs he will receive a contract extension when his current deal ends at the season’s close.
Barca aims to recruit Harry Kane
According to the Sport (Spain), Barcelona has targeted Harry Kane, the 32-year-old Bayern Munich striker. The English star is said to have a release clause valued at €65 million (equivalent to £57 million). However, Kane appears to want to wait until the end of the 2025–2026 season before making his final decision about his future.
Importantly, this is not the first time Barca has been interested in an experienced player from Bayern. In summer 2022, they signed Robert Lewandowski when he was already 33. Since then, the Polish striker has scored up to 105 goals for Camp Nou, confirming he was a successful signing despite initial skepticism.
For Kane, fitness and speed have never been the defining factors of his playing style. The English striker is famous for his positioning sense and delicate finishing, so even at 32, he can still be a dependable short-term option. However, signing a player in the late stage of his career always carries risks regarding performance and sustainability.
Barcelona is still struggling with ongoing financial difficulties. Although they might afford to sign Kane next summer, this clearly isn’t a long-term investment.
Not only Barca, but Real Madrid is also reportedly eyeing Kane, especially if Vinícius Junior leaves Bernabéu in the summer. Under coach Xabi Alonso, Real’s project is very attractive with several major signings in the last two years like Kylian Mbappé and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Real Madrid also surpasses Barca in European success with 15 Champions League titles—9 more than their rival, including 6 victories in the last 12 seasons.
If Barcelona wants to persuade Kane to pick Camp Nou over Bernabéu, they need to prove they still possess the ambition and capability to compete in both La Liga and the Champions League. However, whether they can compete with Real financially and in influence remains an open question.
