Coach Mikel Arteta admitted his worries when striker Viktor Gyokeres sustained a muscle injury during the victory over Burnley, threatening Arsenal with a potential attacking crisis before the Champions League matches.
Mikel Arteta is anxious as key striker Viktor Gyokeres picked up a muscle injury in Arsenal’s 2-0 away win at Burnley last weekend. The Swedish star was substituted just after halftime and missed training on Monday, making it highly likely he will be absent for the upcoming Champions League group stage match at Slavia Prague this week.
Since joining Arsenal in the summer from Sporting Lisbon, Gyokeres quickly proved his worth by scoring 6 goals in 14 appearances across all competitions. Although he has yet to score against top Premier League teams, the Swedish forward is highly regarded for his movement, pressing, and overall contribution to the team’s play. However, his sudden muscle injury has caused great concern for the Arsenal coaching staff, especially as Arteta is already short of attacking options.
“It’s worrying because Viktor rarely suffers muscle injuries. He felt discomfort and had to leave the pitch, which is always dangerous for a player with such explosive pace and style,” Arteta said during the pre-match press conference in Prague.
Arsenal’s troubles don’t end there. Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are still recovering, while Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Noni Madueke are not yet ready to return. Midfielder Martin Zubimendi also faced fitness issues in the Burnley game and will be suspended for the Champions League due to accumulating yellow cards.
With numerous injuries, Arsenal faces the risk of losing momentum during the demanding period ahead, as they need to maintain their Premier League lead while aiming for deep progress in the Champions League. Nonetheless, Arteta affirmed the team will fight with maximum spirit and hopes Gyokeres’ injury is minor enough for him to return before the upcoming North London derby.
“We have to adapt and make the most of what we have. The season is long, and the team’s spirit is what matters most,” Arteta emphasized.
