Erik ten Hag is on the verge of re-entering the Premier League after Wolves named him among the contenders to succeed coach Vitor Pereira, who was sacked because of disappointing results.
According to The Athletic, Wolves’ management is seriously considering appointing Erik ten Hag — former Manchester United manager — as their new head coach. After securing only 2 points from the first 10 matches and dropping to the bottom of the table, the Molineux club must act to salvage their season. The 0-3 defeat to Fulham last weekend was seen as the final straw that led to Coach Pereira losing his position.
Ten Hag is currently unemployed after parting ways with Bayer Leverkusen in September, just 62 days after replacing Xabi Alonso. Despite his brief stint in Germany, the Dutch coach has attracted interest from several clubs due to his extensive experience and modern football philosophy.
A close source revealed: “Ten Hag is very eager to return to working in the Premier League, a place where he has many memories, both glorious and challenging.”
Previously, Ten Hag spent over two years managing Manchester United, guiding the team to win the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. However, a decline in form during the first half of the 2024/25 season led to his mid-season dismissal. Nevertheless, Ten Hag is undeniably a tactically sharp coach with strong locker room management skills — qualities Wolves desperately need in their relegation battle.
With stable financial resources and a squad filled with promising players, Wolves are seen as a suitable destination for Ten Hag to rebuild his career. His past success with Ajax, leading the Dutch side to the 2019 Champions League semifinals, demonstrates his ability to revive a struggling team.
Besides Ten Hag, Wolves are also considering other candidates such as Gary O’Neil, Michael Carrick, Rob Edwards, and Brendan Rodgers. However, according to British media, Ten Hag is regarded as the most “appropriate” choice — experienced enough, not overly expensive, and capable of restoring the club’s identity quickly.
If the deal goes through, Ten Hag will make an emotional return to the Premier League — a league where he left both marks and controversies. Coincidentally, he may soon face his former club Manchester United on December 9th when Wolves host the Red Devils at Molineux.
That promises to be an extremely special match, where Ten Hag will have the chance to confront the club that once dismissed him and prove he still has what it takes to conquer the Premier League once again.
