Ex-England coach Gareth Southgate has officially spoken out regarding speculation about him potentially coming back to manage Manchester United.
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, the 55-year-old strategist confirmed he is “very comfortable” living outside of football and has no plans to return to coaching soon.
After parting ways with England following EURO 2024, Southgate became a sought-after figure for many top clubs, including Manchester United. This connection was further amplified due to his close relationship with Sir Dave Brailsford, who currently serves as a football advisor at Old Trafford under the INEOS group.
However, Southgate openly dismissed all rumors:
“They (Man United) already have a manager, and he is doing quite well,” Southgate said with a smile. “I have spent 37 years in football, and honestly, I no longer have a strong desire to continue coaching. Right now, I am relaxing, enjoying life and new work that gives me a different sense of purpose.”
Currently, Southgate is focusing on his memoir and leadership training projects for young people. He mentioned that these activities bring him more fulfillment than returning to the high-pressure environment of top-level football.
Southgate was appointed England manager in 2016 and experienced eight memorable years with the “Three Lions.” He led the team to two Euro finals (2020, 2024) and a World Cup semi-final in 2018, ending decades of disappointment for English football. He was knighted by the British monarchy for his achievements.
Although Southgate insists he has no plans to return, sources in England say major clubs will keep a close watch on him in case of coaching changes. His calm demeanor, personnel management skills, and influence are still seen as an ideal model for teams seeking stability, especially Manchester United.
However, at present, Southgate seems content with his tranquil life off the pitch, focusing on books, speaking engagements, and community projects. He shared: “I’m not sure if I will return to football. But right now, I feel very comfortable and happy. I am doing meaningful things, and that is enough.”
