The Regent of Johor, Ismail, declared he will bear the entire cost to support FAM’s appeal to CAS.
Amidst the Malaysian Football Association (FAM) facing severe sanctions from FIFA, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, owner of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) club and current Regent of Johor, has taken a strong stance by pledging to fund all costs for FAM to bring the case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
This decision is seen as a clear affirmation of Tunku Mahkota Ismail’s full support for the efforts to seek justice for the seven naturalized Malaysian players currently suspended by FIFA. “I will cover all expenses, without using public funds.”, Tunku Mahkota Ismail emphasized this, sending a message about personal responsibility and his desire to protect the national football image.
The scandal shaking Malaysian football originated from FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee decision, which found that FAM and the seven players violated Article 22 of FIFA’s Disciplinary Code, related to falsifying documents regarding international eligibility.
FAM had previously filed an appeal with FIFA’s Appeals Committee, but the verdict remained unchanged. FIFA upheld the full sanctions. In this context, appealing to CAS is seen as the last chance for FAM and the involved players to seek a fair ruling.
According to various sources, pursuing the appeal at CAS is expected to cost nearly 8 billion VND.. If the legal process is prolonged or requires additional hearings, expenses could increase significantly, adding financial pressure on the federation. Therefore, Tunku Mahkota Ismail’s support is regarded as timely relief, enabling FAM to continue pursuing the case to the end.
Not only a major sponsor of Malaysian football, Tunku Mahkota Ismail is also known as a steadfast ally of FAM during difficult times. He has frequently intervened, provided financial support, and guided the professional development of national football. This recent move further strengthens his image as a responsible leader who always prioritizes national interests.
With strong backing from Tunku Mahkota Ismail, FAM is expected to have sufficient resources and determination to pursue the case fully, thereby protecting the honor of Malaysian football and the legitimate rights of the involved players.
