Chelsea secured just one point versus Qarabag, yet the spotlight post-match was on the fans' anger towards the young center-back Hato due to his dreadful performance.
Chelsea continued to disappoint in the Champions League by drawing 2-2 with Qarabag, despite being heavily favored. However, it was not the result that upset fans the most, but rather the forgettable performance of young defender Jorrel Hato, who was labeled “completely useless” by the home supporters.
Given a starting chance by coach Enzo Maresca, Hato, a £39 million signing from Ajax, endured a nightmare night in Baku. The 19-year-old was at fault for both Chelsea goals conceded: first with a clumsy mistake that allowed Leandro Andrade to equalize, and then a handball in the penalty area that led to a spot-kick giving Qarabag a 2-1 lead.
A lack of concentration and poor judgment saw Hato repeatedly beaten by striker Camilo Duran. On social media platform X (Twitter), numerous Chelsea fans expressed their fury. One account TouchlineX wrote: “Hato is having the worst game of his career! He caused the first goal, then gifted a penalty. A total disaster!”
Another fan compared: “This performance is as bad and lifeless as Bakayoko’s against Watford.” Meanwhile, another user was even harsher: “He is utterly useless. I have never seen a defender this poor at Chelsea.”
Even former goalkeeper Shay Given, commenting on TNT Sports, couldn’t hide his concern: “Hato looks completely lost. He is inexperienced, lacks confidence, and is overwhelmed by the pace of the game.”
With just six appearances since the start of the season, Hato is still struggling to adapt to the Premier League environment and the intensity of European competition. However, his mistakes against Qarabag have raised serious doubts among fans about the decision to sign him, especially since Chelsea clearly lack a more experienced center-back to cover for the injured Levi Colwill.
A dreadful night in Baku, and for Hato, this could be the match that severely damages his standing with both the coach and the supporters.
