Ruben Amorim: 'If we had been braver, MU would have defeated Tottenham'

Coach Ruben Amorim asserted that Manchester United deserved the victory over Tottenham and highlighted that his squad is still evolving to become a more powerful team in the Premier League.

The 2-2 draw between Tottenham and Manchester United at London Stadium evoked mixed emotions among fans. After the match, Ruben Amorim expressed regret over the missed opportunity to secure a win. “Throughout the match, I felt that the three points were within our grasp,” he shared. “If we had shown a bit more courage, we would have sealed the game.”

The Portuguese coach believes the team is gradually improving but acknowledges there is still much to refine. “We are at the early stage of becoming a very strong team. Today should have been a day Manchester United took the win,” he added.

Amorim admitted that MU players performed perfectly in the first half but lacked decisiveness later on: “We didn’t press hard enough, became somewhat complacent after scoring, and lost intensity. If we had been braver, we would have finished the match early. However, if we couldn’t win, at least we had to avoid losing, and we managed that.”

The 39-year-old coach also praised the team’s spirit: “We believed in scoring until the final minute, and the players showed that with De Ligt’s equalizer.” Nevertheless, he acknowledged that this draw cost the team a chance to move into the top group, as Manchester United currently stands 7th and could drop further if those above win.

Additionally, Amorim expressed concern about the upcoming personnel situation confirming that Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui will be absent in December due to participation in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), while Benjamin Sesko’s knee injury might alter winter transfer plans.

“We have to monitor Ben’s condition. Clearly, we will face difficulties, but let’s see if the January transfer window can help improve the squad,” Amorim stated.

With a 5-match unbeaten run, Ruben Amorim still has trust, but pressure is mounting as he admits both he and the team need to “develop further” to reach the level Manchester United fans expect.
