Manchester United's €85 million striker Benjamin Šeško experienced a surreal match; he received a brilliant pass from a teammate and was through on goal, but not only did he fail to score, he didn’t even complete his shot and ended up seriously injuring his knee! After the game, head coach Ruben Amolin stated that depending on the severity of Šeško’s injury, the Red Devils might consider strengthening their attacking lineup in January.

Šeško only came on as a substitute in the 58th minute, but after playing just half an hour, he had to leave the field due to a knee injury. His injury forced Manchester United to play with one less player, finishing the match with 10 men because Amolin had already used all five substitutions.
Having scored only 2 goals in 12 games, Šeško initially had a two-body-length lead over Van der Ven, but he was too slow, and the Tottenham defender, known as the Premier League’s fastest sprinter, quickly closed in with a sliding tackle. Caught off guard, Šeško fell to the ground clutching his knee. After treatment, the Manchester United striker went straight down the tunnel.
After the match, when asked about Šeško’s injury, Amolin expressed concern. “We need to conduct further examinations; there is an issue with his knee, so we need to see the full picture. I don’t know how serious it is yet, but since it’s a knee problem, it’s hard to judge the severity just by looking,” Amolin said. “I’m worried because it’s the knee. We need Benjamin (Šeško) to contribute more to the team. We must thoroughly check and understand his exact condition.”
If Šeško requires a long-term absence, and since Mbemou and Amad Diallo will also be unavailable due to the Africa Cup of Nations, potentially for up to a month, Amolin does not rule out the possibility of bringing in a new forward during the January transfer window. “Of course, we’ll face some challenges then, but we’ve known about this for a while,” he said. “Managing this situation will be difficult, but we will see if there’s a chance to improve the squad and try to make up for past mistakes. Until then, the current players must seize their opportunities.”
Regarding the issues caused by the Africa Cup of Nations, Amolin said: “Although the club can prepare for these challenges in the summer window, many players were unavailable at the time because we only had one match per week. Therefore, managing this properly will be a significant challenge.”

Speaking about the missed chance by Šeško, Amolin said: “I don’t think it was due to a lack of confidence... but that’s not the main concern right now. This has happened before: he initially struggled to score but then netted two goals in the next two matches (against Brentford and Sunderland). For a striker, this is quite common. My current worry is his injury, because it’s in the knee and the exact details are unclear. We need Benjamin.”
Slovenian reports revealed that Šeško underwent an initial medical examination on Saturday. “Sportklub” described the preliminary results of the knee injury assessment as “encouraging.” However, although the initial check showed no major issues, a more detailed MRI scan is still required to gain a comprehensive understanding.
In recent weeks, English media have been speculating that Manchester United is considering signing another new striker because Šeško has struggled to adapt, and backup Joshua Zirkzee has failed to win Amolin’s trust, remaining sidelined for the match against Tottenham. His last appearance was on October 25 against Brighton, where he came on as a substitute for only 8 minutes—his sole playing time in October. Before that, he played just 5 minutes on September 27!
Therefore, it would be understandable if the 24-year-old Dutch forward seeks to leave in the winter window. Amolin can either insist on keeping him or agree to his departure and request the club to find a replacement for the forward position.
Not only Šeško, but Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was also injured during the match, reportedly suffering an Achilles issue and being substituted. However, Maguire returned to the pitch at full time to acknowledge the fans. Along with Cody Meno, who was already sidelined due to injury before the game, three players have now been added to the injury list from what was originally a healthy squad.

For Manchester United, the silver lining is that players can use the international break to recover. The team’s next match is on November 24 at Old Trafford against Everton, coached by Moyes. Maguire was not called up to the England squad by Tuchel, while Šeško was selected for Slovenia, which will face Kosovo and Sweden in World Cup qualifiers. It remains unclear whether he will withdraw from international duty due to his injury.
