Manchester United’s coach Ruben Amorim expressed concerns that Benjamin Sesko might face a long-term absence after the Slovenian striker sustained a knee injury during the 2-2 draw against Tottenham in the 12th round of the Premier League.
Sesko, a £74 million signing (equivalent to $97 million), was introduced in the 58th minute but had to leave the pitch in the 88th minute following a clash with Spurs defender Micky van de Ven.
The 21-year-old player was still able to walk off the field after receiving treatment, but in the post-match press conference, Coach Amorim admitted he was very worried about the seriousness of the injury.
"We need to conduct thorough checks," Amorim said. "He has a knee problem. We suspect something is wrong, but we need more test results to understand better."
When asked if Sesko might face a long-term absence, the Portuguese coach could not provide a positive answer: "It’s a knee injury, and with that location, no one can be certain. Honestly, right now I’m not concerned about his performance but worried because the knee is always a delicate area."
Sesko faces the risk of a prolonged absence.
If Sesko must be sidelined for a long time, MU will be in a difficult situation. Amorim’s team already knew they would lose Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast) and Bryan Mbeumo (Cameroon) when these two players participate in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January. Additionally, defender Noussair Mazraoui will return to serve the Moroccan national team.
This led Coach Amorim to acknowledge the possibility that MU might need to reinforce their squad during the winter transfer window. "We have to consider everything, especially Ben’s (Sesko) condition. We knew in advance that AFCON would affect the squad, so some plans were prepared since the summer. But if the situation worsens, we will have to take action during the January transfer window."
MU will have to wait for MRI scan results in the next few days to determine the severity of Benjamin Sesko’s injury. If the Slovenian striker faces a long-term absence, it will be a major loss for MU.
After the 2–2 draw with Tottenham, MU extended their unbeaten streak in the Premier League to five matches, continuing to chase the Champions League qualification spots. However, this was also their second consecutive away draw, following the stalemate against Nottingham Forest last week.
Coach Amorim believes his team could have secured a victory if they had played "more courageously" during critical moments.
"We controlled the match well but lacked enough intensity. The three points were fully within reach. When you can’t win, at least don’t lose, and today we achieved that. However, to go further, the team must be tougher, dare to press, and take risks. With a bit more bravery, we could have finished the game off."
