Manchester United is confronting a serious problem in attack following Benjamin Sesko’s knee injury in the 2-2 tie against Tottenham.
This incident has forced coach Ruben Amorim to contemplate reinforcing the squad during the January transfer window, but the big question remains: “Can the Red Devils recall Rasmus Hojlund from Napoli?”
Sesko came on as a substitute in the 58th minute and played for about half an hour before leaving the field following a collision with defender Micky van de Ven. The Slovenian forward appeared to be in pain, had to leave the pitch for a medical check, and went straight down the tunnel. After the match, coach Amorim stated: “We need to conduct thorough tests. He feels pain in his knee, and with knees, you can’t take any risks. I can’t yet say if it’s a serious injury.”
With Sesko potentially facing a long-term absence, United is considering adding another striker in the winter transfer window. However, recalling Rasmus Hojlund is nearly impossible. The Danish forward is currently on loan at Napoli, and the agreement between the clubs does not include a clause allowing Man United to call him back early.
According to Manchester Evening News, Napoli holds an option to buy Hojlund outright for £38 million after the season ends. Fabrizio Romano’s sources even suggest this deal could become an obligation if Napoli qualifies for next season’s Champions League, making Hojlund’s return to Old Trafford in January almost impossible.
Since joining the southern Italian club, Hojlund has scored 4 goals in 9 matches, gradually adapting to Serie A and solidifying his place in the reigning champions’ squad. Therefore, Napoli is unlikely to let him go mid-season as they are fiercely competing in European tournaments.
Meanwhile, Amorim also acknowledged that Manchester United will face many challenges ahead, especially with the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) starting and disrupting the squad. “We have to assess everything, especially Ben’s condition. We might need to consider reinforcements in January,” he said.
With Joshua Zirkzee still on the bench and inconsistent form, Manchester United’s striker situation is becoming urgent. If Sesko is sidelined long-term, the Red Devils will likely have to spend on the transfer market, since recalling Hojlund is practically out of reach.
