Former striker Dimitar Berbatov raised doubts about Benjamin Sesko’s readiness to feature for MU in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham. Berbatov believes that if Sesko had physical problems, Ruben Amorim shouldn’t have taken the risk and ended up with an injured player.
Despite having to play away at Tottenham, MU performed well. Bryan Mbeumo put MU ahead in the first half, but Tottenham fought back strongly to lead 2-1 thanks to goals from Mathys Tel and Richarlison. In the 90+4 minute, Matthijs de Ligt’s header equalized for the Red Devils, securing a 2-2 draw.
Unlike the impressive and consistent performance of Mbeumo, another MU newcomer, Benjamin Sesko disappointed. He was brought on as a substitute in the 58th minute and had a great chance to put MU ahead after receiving a pass from Matheus Cunha. However, a brilliant challenge from Micky van de Ven stopped the £74 million MU player from shooting at goal.
Sesko was later forced off due to injury in the final minutes, leaving Ruben Amorim’s team with only 10 men as they had used all their substitutions. Regarding this incident, former striker Dimitar Berbatov questioned whether Sesko was truly ready to play for MU in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham, yet Amorim kept putting him on, resulting in such a poor outcome.
Berbatov’s viewpoint is as follows: "Certainly, Sesko should have done better in that moment, perhaps by using his left foot more to evade the defender, but we cannot deny Mickey van de Ven’s excellent speed in retreating and decision-making. That was a very impressive defensive play. As for Sesko? It seems we all noticed he was somewhat lacking confidence, and playing time might have affected him. Then he left the field due to injury, which shows Sesko was not in the best condition to compete.”
Former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe agreed with Berbatov’s assessment. He emphasized the importance of Sesko’s first touch after receiving Cunha’s pass: “I said before the match, for a striker, when you’re not playing regularly or coming off the bench, it’s frustrating. However, when the chance comes, you must be ready to change the game. You have to make the most of every opportunity, no matter how small. I’m not saying it was an easy chance to score because Van de Ven made a great challenge, but that first touch could have created a goal.”
