Kolo Muani was taken off at halftime and although Spurs coach Thomas Frank initially described the injury as "not serious," French media reported on Sunday that scans revealed the 26-year-old had a fractured jaw.
"The Tottenham Hotspur forward sustained an injury to his lower jaw in Saturday's match against Manchester United," the FFF stated in a Sunday release.
"Following consultation with Dr. Franck Le Gall, who had previously communicated with his Tottenham counterpart, Didier Deschamps confirmed that Kolo Muani would be withdrawing from the national team."
RC Lens winger Florian Thauvin has been called up as his replacement.
Kolo Muani, who has scored nine goals in 31 appearances for France, was recalled for the first time since June after missing Deschamps' previous two squads.
France, who are also missing injured Paris Saint-Germain duo Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele, lead Group D with 10 points from four games and will host Ukraine at the Parc des Princes on Thursday, before traveling to Azerbaijan three days later.
The 2018 World Cup champions can secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America with a victory over Ukraine.
