Following Man City's 3-0 win against Liverpool, Gary Neville believes the Premier League championship battle remains open, and Arsenal needs to be wary of two formidable opponents trailing them.
Manchester City sent a clear challenge to Arsenal by thrashing Liverpool 3-0 at Etihad, marking Pep Guardiola's 1,000th match as a manager. Erling Haaland opened the scoring with a header after his penalty was initially saved, before Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku scored successively to seal an impressive win for the hosts.
This defeat dropped Liverpool to 8th place in the Premier League standings, 8 points behind Arsenal. Meanwhile, the Gunners were held to a 2-2 draw by Sunderland, ending their 10-game winning streak. This result allowed Man City to close the gap to 4 points, making the title race more intense than ever.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville commented: "I think today’s match decided who will be Arsenal’s biggest challenger. And Pep Guardiola, in his 1000th game, along with his players, achieved that". Neville said Man City is gradually returning to winning ways and is the team "nobody wants to be chased by."
The former Man United star has not ruled out Liverpool from the race either. He stated: "If they regain their cohesion, anything can still happen. Van Dijk, Alisson, and Salah are key figures; they have the experience to revive the team." However, Neville admitted Liverpool showed a worrying performance at Etihad and need to seriously reflect on themselves.
According to Neville, although Arsenal remains the most consistent team in the Premier League this season, they cannot afford to be complacent. “This is a marathon, not a sprint. Dropping points is normal; they just need to get back on track after the international break,”he added.
After this round, Pep Guardiola and Manchester City have sent a strong message to Arsenal. Will Mikel Arteta’s team have the resilience to hold onto the top spot until the end of the season?
