Cunha has been a regular fixture in the Brazil setup since Italian coach Ancelotti took over in May, tasked with readying the record five-time World Cup champions for the upcoming tournament in North America next year.
The 26-year-old, who has thrived under United manager Amorim this season, has been included in all four of Ancelotti’s squad announcements, partly due to his versatility, he believes.
Cunha has smoothly transitioned into a hybrid role as an attacking midfielder and forward, a quality he thinks has enhanced his chances for World Cup selection next year.
“Knowing that the coach relies on me to play in various positions is crucial,” Cunha told reporters at a press conference in London on Tuesday. Brazil will face Senegal in a friendly match at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
“It places the responsibility on me to be decisive and to always give my best regardless of where I’m positioned. You have to perform and show that you’re prepared.”
United’s recent turnaround has played a key role in Cunha’s path to the national team. Reflecting on his earlier disappointment of missing Brazil’s 2022 World Cup squad while at Atletico Madrid, Cunha admitted the emotional impact it had on him.
A viral video captured the forward breaking down after hearing about his exclusion, a moment he now views as a pivotal experience.
“Every experience in life is a chance to develop,” he said. “Not making the Qatar squad was painful, but it taught me to handle setbacks in a new way. I’ve grown. That frustration pushed me to where I am today.”
Cunha credited United’s enhanced performances for his current involvement with Brazil.
“Manchester United is a club that should always compete at the highest level,” he said. “I’m thankful to be part of a team that is performing well and competing strongly. To secure a place in the national squad, you need to consistently prove your value at club level.”
Looking ahead to the World Cup next year, Cunha praised the focus and clear direction Ancelotti has instilled in the Brazil team. “This new phase feels different, even with many players rotating in and out. The vision is clear, and everyone knows what we want to accomplish.”
