Before the international break, Leipzig saw their nine-game unbeaten streak end when they squandered a 3-1 lead against Hoffenheim. Determined to avoid repeating that error, the Red Bulls started this match strongly and controlled possession early on.

However, they struggled to seriously threaten Bremen’s goal until their sustained pressure earned them a great chance to open the scoring midway through the first half, but Christoph Baumgartner was unable to direct his header from David Raum’s cross on target.

After several tame shots that were easily saved, Leipzig finally tested Mio Backhaus in the Werder goal just past the 30-minute mark, when Forzan Assan Ouedraogo attempted a long-range effort, but the goalkeeper reacted well to push the ball away from the bottom-left corner.

The best opportunity of the first half came in stoppage time, with Backhaus producing another superb save, denying Baumgartner with an excellent reflex in the top-left corner.

Werder started the second half quickly, coming close just two minutes after the restart through Romano Schmid, but the Frenchman's long-range shot was parried away from the top of the net by Peter Gulacsi.

Nonetheless, the hosts deservedly took the lead when Ouedraogo finally beat Backhaus with a powerful strike into the top-left corner from the edge of the box.

The visitors grew into the match after conceding, nearly equalizing again through Schmid, whose shot aimed at the top left corner was brilliantly saved by Gulacsi.

Leipzig responded perfectly by scoring a second goal in the last 10 minutes, when Xaver Schlager was quickest to react to a loose ball inside the penalty area after a corner, slotting it into the net.

This result allows Werner’s team to keep chasing league leaders Bayern Munich, remaining six points behind in second place. Meanwhile, Bremen dropped further behind in their quest for European qualification, now five points adrift of sixth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt.
