Jon Dahl Tomasson was removed as head coach of the Swedish men's national football team in October 2025 following poor results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The decision came after a series of defeats, including a 1-0 loss at home to Kosovo, which left Sweden at the bottom of their qualifying group standings.
Anders Christiansen has consistently shown respect for Jon Dahl Tomasson. The Malmö FF midfielder first appreciated Tomasson as an assistant coach with the Danish national team, and later they developed a close bond when "JDT" managed Malmo FF for two seasons (2020–21) and appointed "AC" as team captain.
Currently, Christiansen states that "Tomasson's dismissal demonstrates the immense influence of the media" in an interview with Aftonbladet.
"This was likely the clearest example of the media's power. Even if he had remained and Sweden had won the two November games, the negative sentiment would have persisted. It was only a matter of time before the dismissal became official. It became easier to fire him after failing to beat Kosovo at home."
"I need to be cautious with my words. But the external pressure he faced on TV, in the press, and in discussions... they constantly sought out the negative perspective and questioned players about their opinions on everything."
"Had he won those matches, he wouldn't have been dismissed, but the media swayed Swedish public opinion against him, especially after the Kosovo game. I won't claim the media was solely responsible, but it was undoubtedly a major factor."
Graham Potter took over from Tomasson as Sweden's national team coach and started his tenure with a loss to Switzerland and a draw against Slovenia. Nevertheless, Sweden still has a chance to qualify for the World Cup through the playoffs in March.
