Bonds stands as West Ham's longest-serving player, having appeared 799 times during a 21-year spell with the East London club.

He won the FA Cup twice, in 1975 and 1980, reached the 1976 European Cup Winners' Cup final, and also secured the old Second Division title with the Hammers.

After transitioning into coaching, starting with West Ham's youth squad, Bonds was named manager in February 1990.

He achieved promotion from the Second Division in 1991 and, following relegation from the top tier in 1992, guided the team back up the following year.

"We are devastated to share that we lost our beloved Dad today. He was deeply devoted to his family and was the kindest, most loyal, selfless, and loving person," a statement from Bonds' family read.

"Dad had a deep love for West Ham United and its amazing supporters and cherished every moment he spent at the club.

"He will remain forever in our hearts and be deeply missed. We find comfort knowing his legacy will endure eternally."

Bonds departed the Hammers in 1994 when his assistant Harry Redknapp took over as manager.

Voted as the club’s greatest player ever, Bonds has a stand named after him at the London Stadium.

"Never one to seek the spotlight, he was universally loved, respected, and admired by teammates, players, and fans, who will always consider themselves 'Billy Bonds’ Claret and Blue Army'," a West Ham statement declared.

"Rest in peace Billy, our brave, inspiring, lion-hearted leader."

West Ham confirmed there will be a tribute period to honor Bonds before Sunday’s Premier League home match against Liverpool.

A full memorial is planned before the game against Aston Villa at the London Stadium on December 14.

Former West Ham midfielder Joe Cole paid his respects, saying: "Billy was the manager when I signed as a youngster and he was very kind to me and my family.

"Growing up at West Ham, his name is synonymous with the club. Everything positive about West Ham, that was Billy Bonds. This is very sad news, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family."
