At the post-match press conference following the Round 13 Premier League 2025/26 game against Arsenal, Chelsea's head coach Enzo Maresca expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, both before and after Caicedo received a red card.
Chelsea put in a strong effort against Arsenal, the team currently leading both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. During the first 35 minutes, Chelsea completely controlled the game. Their high pressing caused Arsenal great difficulties in building play. The Blues continuously created dangerous attacking chances while minimizing the opponent’s opportunities.
However, the turning point came in the 38th minute when Moises Caicedo was shown a straight red card following a challenge on Mikel Merino. Down to 10 men against 11, Chelsea had to adjust their tactics, focusing on maintaining a solid defense and looking for counterattack chances. Despite being a man down for over half the match, Chelsea allowed Arsenal only 8 shots, the fewest Arsenal have managed in a Premier League game this season.
Speaking after the match, Coach Maresca said he was still pleased with the result: “I think sometimes you have to be content with just one point. Of course, our goal is to win.”
The Italian manager emphasized that Chelsea actually played better than Arsenal during the period when both teams had 11 players:
“When we were at full strength (11v11), I believe we played better than them. We controlled the match and didn’t let them create chances. The red card changed the situation, but the way the players dealt with it was truly impressive.”
When asked what pleased him the most, Maresca highly praised the team’s spirit: “Definitely the players’ effort. Arsenal are leading the Premier League, topping the Champions League, and have the best defense in both competitions.
One of Chelsea’s standout performers in this match was goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. He made numerous excellent saves, controlled the penalty area well, and remained composed during intense pressure from Arsenal. Sanchez’s reliability helped Chelsea hold firm despite being a man down and secure an important point.
Reece James was another key figure. Positioned in central midfield, he continued to demonstrate all-round quality with his tackling, distribution, and defensive support. Even after recently returning from injury, James played with high intensity and showed his vital role in Maresca’s system.
Regarding the performance of these two players, Maresca affirmed: “Robert Sanchez played very well. When you’re down to 10 men against Arsenal, if you want to keep a point or win, you need outstanding performances like those from Robert Sanchez and Reece James. Both of them played excellently today.”
A point against the strongest team in England at the moment is an encouraging result. More importantly, Chelsea have shown tactical maturity under Maresca’s guidance. If they maintain the fighting spirit displayed against Arsenal, The Blues can definitely aim for better results in the future.
Coach Mikel Arteta: 'Chelsea deliberately targeted Arsenal players' Mikel Arteta admitted that Arsenal experienced a match “full of emotions,” and insisted Chelsea intentionally targeted players who had already been booked, despite Arsenal having the numerical advantage for most of the game.
