Dutch media confirm that up to now, PSSI has not made any official contact with Giovanni van Bronckhorst, a potential candidate for the head coach position of the Indonesian national team.
According to the Voetbal Primeur (Netherlands), the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has not yet held any discussions with Giovanni van Bronckhorst regarding the possibility of him coaching the national team.
This information comes amid rumors that the 50-year-old strategist might leave his assistant coach role under Arne Slot at Liverpool to start a new chapter in his coaching career. Many sources say Van Bronckhorst, who has Indonesian heritage, is on PSSI’s shortlist to replace Patrick Kluivert as head coach.
The Voetbal Primeur reports: “Sources close to Van Bronckhorst confirm that no contact has been made between him and PSSI. It is also unclear whether the former Dutch captain is interested in leaving Liverpool to return to Southeast Asia. However, given his roots, Van Bronckhorst certainly has a special connection with Indonesia.”
Van Bronckhorst was born in Rotterdam but carries both Dutch and Indonesian blood. His father is of mixed Dutch-Indonesian descent, while his mother comes from Maluku, a region with a large Indonesian diaspora.
Previously, journalist Dharmesh Sheth from Sky Sports also revealed that besides Van Bronckhorst, PSSI is considering former Canada national team coach John Herdman. According to Sheth, Herdman has even completed an official interview with PSSI representatives in Europe, where the federation is holding a series of meetings with potential candidates.
Sheth shared on social media: “Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Liverpool’s assistant coach, is being considered by PSSI for the head coach role of the Indonesian national team. Meanwhile, John Herdman has completed the first round of interviews.”
Currently, PSSI has not issued any official announcements regarding the selection process for the new head coach, but the mention of names like Van Bronckhorst and Herdman shows Indonesia’s determination to find an internationally renowned strategist.
