Newcastle play host to Spurs following an impressive 4-1 victory at Everton and have the chance to secure a third consecutive league win against the London team. Meanwhile, Spurs arrive at St James' Park after a home loss to Fulham.
When asked about eliminating Tottenham from the League Cup, Howe commented: "That was a difficult match, and this one will be just as tough.
"They have some players returning from that game, plus a strong squad and a very capable manager.
"We've always believed during tough periods that the league is very competitive and a steady run of wins can push you up the table.
"A few victories and we return to where we want to be, so this is a crucial moment because we cannot afford to fall behind. We really need a series of positive results."
Rotation planned
Newcastle's success at Everton showcased the squad's depth, with Howe needing to rotate players due to last week's Champions League fixtures and some injury issues.
He also mentioned this morning: "From the start of this season, we've said it will be a collective squad effort to get through. We've managed the squad carefully over recent games and rely heavily on data from the sports science team.
"After matches against West Ham and Brentford, we had to select a lineup physically prepared to perform, and that will guide my choices moving forward.
"When we are strong physically, we are tough opponents. Given our schedule, having fresh players on the field is important, but the players must also push themselves hard throughout the season."
Maintaining perspective
Asked whether back-to-back Premier League wins indicate Newcastle are returning to form, Howe preferred to stay cautious.
"The last two league games have been true to our style. I hesitate to say we’re fully back, but I believe we’re heading in the right direction," he stated.
The manager was particularly impressed by Nick Woltemade's goal at Everton.
"That was one of my favorite goals from him so far. The finish was exceptional, and very few players could pull it off like he did."
Howe was also pleased with Anthony Elanga's performance, with many considering it the best showing by the Swedish winger in a Newcastle shirt.
The summer signing from Nottingham Forest is now nearing the level that convinced Newcastle to invest in him.
Howe commented: "From the very start of the game, he made a full-pitch run.
"That’s a big adjustment for any player, but it marked significant progress in adapting to the demands of playing for Newcastle."
Howe also acknowledged that Malick Thiaw has become an attacking asset for Newcastle. The German defender scored twice at Everton and will also be a threat on set pieces tomorrow against Tottenham.
He added:"Malick is quite involved in our set-piece routines, though he hadn’t finished like he did on Saturday before. Set-piece goals are crucial and can decide matches."
Latest on Wissa
Before finishing, Howe gave another update on summer signing Yoane Wissa, who is recovering from a knee injury.
The manager shared encouraging news for Newcastle supporters: "He took part in an 11v11 training match while we were at Everton. He’ll have another session this week, and we’ll monitor his progress."
