A circulating video of Coach Shin Tae Yong has sparked serious concerns about his treatment of Ulsan HD players.
Ulsan HD defender, Jung Seung-hyun, shocked South Korean football by publicly revealing he was once slapped by former coach Shin Tae Yong. He only confirmed the incident after the match against Jeju United on November 30, just as the video capturing the moment went viral, stirring strong reactions within the football community in the country.
Jung said he received numerous messages of concern after the video spread, stating: “Many people reached out to me because they were worried. My parents would definitely be upset seeing this. It feels really bad.” Previously, the 31-year-old defender stayed silent for a long time to avoid causing more trouble in the locker room.
He further shared that Coach Shin’s behavior made him question himself many times. Jung said: “There were many moments I wondered if it was right. Whether it’s harassment or violence, if the recipient feels violated, then it is violence.” According to him, this is not an isolated personal experience; many teammates might have gone through similar situations.
The video is believed to have recorded the first meeting between Coach Shin Tae Yong and Ulsan HD players. Notably, the club is filming a documentary over several years, so the entire incident might have been documented. When asked about rumors that Coach Shin stomped on a player’s foot and blew a whistle close to his ear, Jung responded: “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” hinting at the truthfulness of the claims.
Jung also compared that at clubs in the Middle East, where he previously played, such behavior would lead to immediate dismissal. He said: “Even the foreign players were shocked.” Jung revealed that captain Lee Chung-yong said the club would soon release an official statement. However, Lee has not spoken out yet due to a hand injury sustained in the match against Jeju United.
Veteran defender Kim Young-gwon also confirmed he is waiting to meet with the club regarding a statement but affirmed: “I am definitely ready to speak out about Coach Shin Tae Yong.” Meanwhile, Coach Shin Tae Yong denied all accusations, claiming his actions were merely “expressions of care,” and also denied rumors of playing golf during the away trip.
The Korean coach was fired by Ulsan HD after just 65 days due to poor results. After leaving, he accused the club of isolating him and treating him like “a puppet coach.” However, new allegations from key Ulsan HD players have escalated the issue, signaling an ongoing internal crisis for the club.
