Coach Xabi Alonso is reportedly at risk of losing his job at Real Madrid if he fails to meet the club management's expectations.
According to The Athletic, the upcoming match against Athletic Bilbao this midweek will be a decisive moment determining Xabi Alonso’s future at Real Madrid. Pressure on the Spanish coach is mounting rapidly following a series of disappointing results.
Alonso was appointed by Real Madrid in the summer, replacing Carlo Ancelotti, who left Bernabeu to manage Brazil’s national team after a trophyless season for Los Blancos across all competitions. The management hopes Alonso can replicate the remarkable success he achieved at Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the team to win the 2024 Bundesliga, German Cup, and Supercup.
However, Alonso’s journey at Bernabeu has started with difficulties. The first test was the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA, where Real Madrid suffered a 4-0 semifinal defeat to PSG. Despite an impressive start in La Liga and initially holding a strong lead at the top, recent poor form has allowed Barcelona to overtake them for first place.
Besides declining results, internal team issues have also emerged. Alonso is reportedly struggling to maintain good relations with key players such as Vinicius, Rodrygo, and Federico Valverde. The recent draw against Girona has further raised doubts among the management about whether the 44-year-old coach is still the right fit for the team.
Under all this pressure, the upcoming match against Athletic Bilbao is seen as a turning point that could decide whether Alonso continues to lead Real Madrid or parts ways with the club just months into his tenure.
Following the draw with Girona, Alonso himself confirmed that he and his players will aim for three points in the upcoming away game in the Basque region, in order to keep chasing Barcelona in the title race.
Alonso stated: "This is an opportunity for us to secure another away victory. The current points stand as they are, but we remain in the competition. The season is long, and the standings will surely be tight with many fluctuations ahead. We are targeting three points, and Bilbao is the right moment to achieve that. We need the win and are very eager for it. After today’s match, the whole team will review everything to find ways to improve."
Currently, Los Blancos trail Barcelona by just one point. With the Catalan side set to face Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid can realistically dream of reclaiming the top spot, provided they win fully against Bilbao and hope their city rivals can hold Barcelona back.
The match between Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid will take place at 1:00 AM on December 4th.
