Bayern Munich's chairman takes a jab at the English giants

Despite helping his team secure victory, the Premier League star still couldn't escape criticism.

Florian Wirtz returned to play for Liverpool in their 2-0 win over West Ham United last weekend, helping The Reds temporarily lift the gloomy atmosphere following a series of consecutive defeats in the Premier League. However, this performance was still not enough to stop Bayern Munich figures from making sharp remarks about the English club and the German midfielder.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who was once pursued by Bayern Munich and Man City, chose to join Liverpool for a fee of £116 million last summer. At Anfield, Wirtz has faced considerable challenges adapting to English football; after 17 appearances, he has yet to score or assist in the Premier League. This has led to his frequent rotation in the starting lineup by coach Arne Slot and experimentation in various positions.

Returning from a muscle injury, Wirtz immediately made an impact as one of the standout players in the win against West Ham, especially in his favored number 10 role. Wirtz's delicate touch set up Cody Gakpo to assist Alexander Isak for the opening goal, helping Liverpool climb to eighth place in the Premier League standings.

Nevertheless, Bayern Munich did not miss the chance to mock the Reds. Honorary president Uli Hoeness, speaking at the “Power Days” event in Munich, praised Bayern as one of the best teams worldwide and did not hesitate to criticize Liverpool’s miserable season. He emphasized: “They spent 500 million euros but are having a dreadful season. All are superstars, each wanting to keep the ball to themselves. Poor Florian Wirtz, he barely gets a touch because Salah, Szoboszlai, and others only play with their own ball.”

Bayern Munich is enjoying a stellar season with 18 wins in their last 20 matches, while Liverpool continues to struggle with inconsistent form. Despite the jabs from the former Bayern leader, Wirtz is still expected to quickly adapt and become a key player for Liverpool for the rest of the season.

Having just helped his team overcome West Ham, Wirtz is gradually proving his worth and showing that Liverpool have no regrets about choosing him over Bayern for the German midfielder.
