For the second consecutive month, Messi has topped Flashscore's rating charts, achieving an average score of 8.5 over four matches played during this period.
Leading from the front
The world’s most decorated footballer may be approaching the twilight of his career, but at 38, he continues to influence his team’s success. Inter Miami are pursuing their inaugural MLS Cup title, with the Argentine spearheading their playoff journey, culminating in Saturday’s final against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Throughout November, he scored in every game except one, netting four goals in the playoffs and one in a friendly against Angola for Argentina.
As has been typical throughout his illustrious career, he also set up his teammates frequently. His assist count surpasses his goals, with seven assists in just five matches.
This contribution helped his team defeat Nashville in the opening round after four games, followed by a dominant 4-0 win over FC Cincinnati which led to a conference final against New York City, where Messi was more reserved, earning a 7.4 rating as his team comfortably triumphed 5-1.
Inter Miami isn’t solely reliant on one player, but having a star like him certainly helps.
During the month, Messi earned two flawless match ratings of 10, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he achieves the same in Saturday’s final.
Most Valuable Player
Despite a career filled with major honors, the league MVP award may not be the centerpiece in Messi’s trophy collection.
However, the MLS Cup could hold greater significance. After securing the Supporters’ Shield last year—the award for the best regular-season team—this is the trophy the club has pursued since its founding in 2018.
It will justify his move to the US in 2023 and finally silence doubts about whether this is the country’s top team.
Messi has become the face of this franchise. His record of scoring more than a goal per game highlights his vital role in Miami, and despite being the main target for opponents, no one has managed to stop him.
He claimed the MVP title last season and is the clear favorite to repeat in 2025, which would be a crowning achievement in one of his most impactful seasons yet.
What lies ahead?
Messi’s club career is expected to continue in Miami well into his 40s. In October, he agreed to a new three-year contract, keeping him in Florida until 2028 and coinciding with the opening of their new stadium scheduled for April.
This deal extends his stay until he turns 41 and allows him to participate in next year’s World Cup on home turf.
This will likely be his final international tournament, and having won it four years ago, he could further cement his legacy if Argentina retains the title.
Although some of his physical attributes have declined over time, his football intelligence, as shown by two consecutive Player of the Month awards, remains sharp.
The World Cup is his next major goal, and Inter Miami will probably give him the necessary rest and preparation time. MLS will pause from May 25th, granting him two and a half weeks to recover. However, it’s expected he will have limited playing time for Miami leading up to the tournament.
For now, glory awaits this weekend as they face the Vancouver Whitecaps at 20:30 CET on Saturday for the MLS Cup.
A win for Messi will add another trophy to his collection, and given his recent form, his impact is expected to secure the victory.
