Chelsea’s draw against Arsenal extended the club’s unbeaten streak to seven games across all competitions as the Blues push for the title against their London rivals. Maresca has yet to defeatLeeds in a competitive fixture and aims to secure three vital points at Elland Road this week.
James to replace Caicedo?
However, the Italian coach will be without Moises Caicedo, who received a red card against the Gunners following a reckless tackle on Mikel Merino, and he was asked how he plans to replace him.
“Certainly, we are a stronger team with Cole (Palmer), Moi (Caicedo), and Levi (Colwill), but when these players are unavailable, we must find alternatives. Now we have to try something different.
“Andrey (Santos) is prepared. His natural role is as a No. 6, like Moi, and he is ready. Another player who can perform well in that position is Josh (Acheampong), but we will see.”
England international Reece James might also be an option for Maresca, as the full-back has excelled both defensively and in midfield this season. The Italian acknowledged this possibility but stressed the need to manage his playing time as the schedule intensifies.
“It’s complicated. I would like to start him in every match, but we have to consider.
“He can operate in both roles. He has spent his career as a full-back but has also played in midfield. He performs well in both positions. When we use him as a midfielder, we seek physical presence in the center. It depends on the tactical plan, but as you said, he is doing very well in both roles.”
Palmer returns
Leeds’ last victory over Chelsea was in their previous meeting at Elland Road in 2022, a 3-0 win against former coach Thomas Tuchel's side. Maresca will be careful going into the match, both tactically and with the return of Cole Palmer, who may start the game as he shared some team updates.
“He is available. He was on the bench in the last match. Playing with 10 men made it harder for Cole because he still needs to regain full fitness. The plan is to give him some minutes until he can handle 90 minutes.
“Everyone else is fine. Romeo (Lavia) is still recovering. Dario (Essugo) is okay and has started training with us again. He now needs to take it a bit easier. He will be out for a little longer, but hopefully nothing serious.”
