The English midfielder shared his thoughts with the media after Man United's comeback win over Crystal Palace.
Man United finally secured their first victory at Selhurst Park since 2020 thanks to Mason Mount's precise free-kick, and the English midfielder revealed an interesting story behind this crucial goal.
During the match against Crystal Palace, Mount and captain Bruno Fernandes executed a well-coordinated free-kick routine. Fernandes skillfully passed the ball to Mount, who fired a low shot from about 19 meters, sending the ball over the wall and past goalkeeper Dean Henderson in the 63rd minute. This goal not only earned three valuable points but also marked Mount’s 50th career goal and his sixth since joining Man United from Chelsea for £60 million in 2023.
Mount shared about the moment before taking the shot: "I told him I would pass the ball to him. He said no, stand there. Then I said, 'You shoot,' because the bright sun made visibility difficult today. In the end, he told me to stay put and passed the ball to me. My reaction was like, 'Oh, I have to act fast.' Everything happened so quickly that Palace couldn’t react in time."
Besides making an impact with the goal, Mount also completed a full 90 minutes in the Premier League for the first time since playing against Palace for Chelsea in January 2023. He said: "It feels like it’s been a long time. Playing the full 90 minutes is a big step for me. I’ve worked very hard and feel really good. Whether starting or coming off the bench, you always have to keep the mindset to influence the game."
This victory also helps Man United forget the tough loss against Everton in the previous round. Mount emphasized: "Now is the time for us to push forward and aim for the top 4. Today's win is extremely important to build momentum for the upcoming matches."
TNT experts Peter Crouch and Joe Cole assessed that if Man United maintain this form, finishing in the top 7 would be a significant improvement after ending 15th last season. However, the real goal Mount and his teammates are targeting is a spot in next season’s Champions League, affirming the Red Devils’ ambition to return to the top.
With impressive form and strong synergy with Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount is becoming a key pillar helping Man United pursue a top 4 finish and justify the value of the £60 million signing.
