Under the management of Antonio Conte, the Scotsman scored 13 goals and contributed six assists across all competitions as the Italian coach led Napoli to secure the league championship.
He is the first Scottish player to be awarded Serie A’s footballer of the year, joining the ranks of legends like Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kaka, Francesco Totti and Zinedine Zidane in the record books.
McTominay also surpassed Denis Law’s 63-year-old record for the most goals scored by a Scottish player in a single Serie A season by netting 12 league goals in what has been the best season of his career so far.
After receiving the award, the former Manchester United player expressed how much he values his connection with Napoli.
“Choosing Napoli was an easy decision. I found the perfect place. It’s amazing, unbelievable to be here and to win this award. Thanks to everyone — the team, staff, and my teammates. My relationship with Napoli is unique; there are so many special places here.”
McTominay is set to play again in the Coppa Italia match against Cagliari on Wednesday evening. His transfer to Italy for just £25 million appears to be a great deal for the Serie A club, who are once again competing for the title this season.
