The Sun revealed that the player, whose identity is legally protected, was stopped by Border Force officers at passport control on Sunday prior to boarding a flight.

Essex Police commented: "A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and has been released on bail until a date in late February 2026 as our investigation continues."

The newspaper reported that police records indicated the suspect was wanted in relation to an older allegation.
