The 20-year-old center-back has passed his medical exam and agreed on terms with the MLS team, clearing the path for his move to the U.S.
However, he will remain available for Saturday’s Carling Knockout final against Marumo Gallants, which will mark his final appearance in a Pirates jersey. The transfer fee is estimated to be around $3 million (R51 million).
“Orlando Pirates Football Club confirms it has reached an agreement with Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire regarding the transfer of defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi,” the Soweto club stated in a press release.
“After constructive talks between both clubs’ management, it was agreed that Mbokazi will stay with Orlando Pirates until their final official match of 2025.”
Chicago Fire also verified the transfer and announced that Mbokazi will “fill a U-22 initiative slot and an international roster spot, with his contract extending through 2029, including a club option for the 2029/30 season.”
He will join his new team following the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, with the final scheduled for January 18.
“We are thrilled to bring Mbekezeli into the Club as we continue to reinforce our defense,” said Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter.
“Despite his young age, he has demonstrated significant potential and proven leadership and competitiveness at the international stage. We anticipate an immediate contribution and further development going forward.”
Mbokazi’s career has progressed rapidly, having made his Pirates debut in March and earned his first Bafana Bafana cap in June.
He is now a regular in the national team and will be an important player in Morocco, known for his strength, speed, and goal-scoring ability, having netted some remarkable goals.
He is regarded as the next major talent in South African football, and how he adapts in the United States will be crucial for his career.
