The forward netted four times against Olympiacos in the Champions League last week and has scored 23 goals in 19 matches across all competitions this season.
Mbappe has urged Madrid to stay united in recent weeks as the Spanish giants face challenges maintaining consistency under Alonso.
"He has performed very well individually, providing great support to the team," Alonso said at a press conference ahead of Wednesday's La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao.
"For Kylian, it’s not only about scoring goals, which ultimately is the key, but he also plays other critical roles like leadership, influencing the squad, assisting his teammates, and that’s extremely important every day."
Madrid trail champions Barcelona by one point following a third straight draw in the top division on Sunday, against Catalan underdogs Girona.
Spanish media have speculated that Alonso’s position as Madrid coach could be in jeopardy if the team’s performance does not improve.
The Basque manager admitted he has recently discussed with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez about improving the team's results.
"The talks have been very constructive, positive in tone, focused on boosting results, and that’s what we’ve discussed," Alonso said, acknowledging Madrid’s inconsistency this season.
"I believe we have lacked steadiness in our performances, and we aim to play better in the next match," the coach added.
"We have lost some quality in our gameplay, and a bit of our energy as well."
