Newcastle bounced back from a disappointing UEFA Champions League (UCL) loss to Marseille with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Everton at the weekend, carrying that momentum into this match.

There was energetic play from players like Lewis Hall and Harvey Barnes, and Lewis Miley registered the hosts’ first shot on target after receiving the ball near the edge of the box, but he failed to place it past Guglielmo Vicario.

The home side grew increasingly dominant as the half progressed and came very close to scoring when Joelinton broke through and saw his shot from a tight angle strike the far post.

Spurs responded well and were nearly ahead themselves when Lucas Bergvall’s clever backheel from Mohammed Kudus’ cross skimmed the top of the crossbar.

That was the extent of the first half, but Eddie Howe’s team started the second half strongly and came closest yet to scoring. Barnes broke free and forced a strong save from Vicario, but Kevin Dansomade a vital clearance on the line to deny Nick Woltemade’s follow-up header.

Newcastle dominated the game and kept pressing, finally rewarded when Bruno Guimaraes capitalized on a loose clearance, positioned himself perfectly, and expertly placed the ball into the bottom corner with 20 minutes remaining.

They maintained pressure but were shocked when their opponents equalized seven minutes later with their first shot on target, as captain Cristian Romero dived ahead of Dan Burn to connect with Kudus’ cross, scoring a powerful header.

But the late excitement wasn’t finished. There was debate over whether Rodrigo Bentancur’s hold on Burn warranted a penalty, which VAR confirmed, and Anthony Gordon stepped up to blast into the top corner – his first Premier League goal this season.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Romero brilliantly executed an overhead kick after a corner was only partially cleared, sending it past Aaron Ramsdale to secure Spurs an unexpected point.

They remain without a win in five matches but will be encouraged by their determination. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s six-match home winning streak ended at the last moment.
