Manchester United plans to loan out multiple young players in the upcoming January transfer window to gain experience. Chidow Obie, notable for netting 10 goals in one match for Arsenal’s U16 side against Liverpool, is one of the three players listed. Center-back Aiden Haven and left-back Diego León are also named, both struggling to get sufficient minutes with the senior squad.

Last season, 17-year-old Danish prodigy Obie appeared eight times, but manager Ruben Amorim made it clear that it was too early for him to play first-team football, mainly due to a lack of options at the time. Fans had hoped he might break the record as Manchester United’s youngest scorer, but he was unable to do so.
Former Italian wunderkind Federico Macheda holds the record as the Red Devils’ youngest Premier League goal scorer. Back in 2009, at 17 years and 227 days old, he came off the bench to score a decisive winner against Aston Villa, making his name. Obie no longer has a chance to break this record, especially after Benjamin Sesko was signed this summer. Amorim believes it’s better for Obie to compete with the U21s.
Amorim has instructed Obie to develop a more diverse range of goal-scoring methods and to deepen his understanding of the additional skills required for a number 9 striker. This season, Obie has scored five goals in 13 appearances for Manchester United’s U21 team under Travis Binnion, mainly relying on physicality, but his dribbling and teamwork have improved.
However, Manchester United feels this is still insufficient and is considering loaning Obie out in January so he can gain first-team experience in League Two or the National League, aiming for further growth. Similarly, English defender Haven, also a product of Arsenal’s youth system, might follow the same path.
The 19-year-old “Heavenly Brother” was once a regular starter last season but has been hampered by injuries, preventing further progress. This season, his status has dropped, and he has only played 158 minutes so far.
Haven has featured in only two Manchester United matches, against Fulham and Brighton. In the Brighton game, he provided an assist that helped Mbemou score the fourth goal in a 4-2 victory. During Sunday’s away match at Crystal Palace, Haven was on the bench and did not get playing time.

With Manchester United out of European competitions and eliminated early from the English League Cup, the club mostly plays one match per week. Amorim has little need to rotate key players, making it hard for fringe and young players to find opportunities, which is not ideal for their development.
With Lisandro Martínez returning to action at Selhurst Park, Haven has become the third choice at left center-back, behind Luke Shaw and Lima. If Maguire recovers in the coming weeks, Haven’s spot on the bench could also be at risk.
Manchester United’s U21 team lost 1-4 to Belgium’s Anderlecht on Tuesday, confirming their early exit from the Premier League International Cup. This reduces match opportunities for young players, prompting United to consider loaning out 18-year-old Paraguayan left-back Diego León, signed this summer, to gain playing time elsewhere.
León joined last summer for £7 million and initially had no plans to go out on loan. However, without making his debut yet, the young Paraguayan has come to terms with the reality and is considering a loan move. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ligue 1 club Nice could be a destination, though the team currently faces internal turmoil, with players taking legal action after being attacked by their own fans.
Overall, Manchester United is pleased with the performances of most of their loaned-out players during the first half of the season. Goalkeeper Radek Vitek and full-back Harry Armas have excelled at Championship clubs Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday respectively, making it likely they will return to United’s first team next summer. Notably, Armas is also a left-back.
Nineteen-year-old forward Ethan Whitley, loaned to League One’s Northampton, has been a regular starter, scoring 3 goals and providing 2 assists in 17 league appearances. Midfielders Ethan Ennis and Dan Gore have gained valuable experience as starters for League Two’s Fleetwood and League One’s Rotherham respectively.

Within Manchester United’s academy, 18-year-old midfielder Jack Fletcher and winger Shay Lacy are considered the most likely to make their debuts during the Africa Cup of Nations period, having recently been included in Amorim’s Premier League squad list.
