Paqueta was unusually booked twice for dissent within a minute with less than 10 minutes remaining. Despite his teammates trying to calm him, the 28-year-old Brazilian international continued to argue with referee Darren England and was sent off.
Following the game, Paqueta criticized the Football Association, accusing them of not providing psychological support during a spot-fixing inquiry. He also issued an apology to teammates and fans but maintained that his behavior did not justify a red card.
Paqueta was cleared by the FA of four spot-fixing allegations in July after a thorough investigation. Facing the possibility of a lifetime ban, Paqueta denied all accusations related to spot-fixing.
"I spoke with Lucas and he expressed regret to his teammates," Nuno said to reporters beforeWest Ham's trip to Manchester United on Thursday.
"He is not okay and is going through a difficult time. He feels disappointed and upset but understands the error he made and wants to move on. Sometimes people don’t realize all the challenges footballers face, but Lucas will get through this."
Paqueta transferred to West Ham from Olympique Lyonnais in 2022 and is contracted until 2027. Despite rumors about his future, Nuno confirmed Paqueta is content at the East London club.
"I believe the investigation is affecting him, but he is determined to move past it and continue playing football the way he does," Nuno stated.
"We have had a positive discussion. The team stands behind Lucas."
