After more than 14 years guarding the goal for the Bavarian club and maintaining top-level performance, Neuer opens up for the first time about the next phase of his career.
Manuel Neuer’s future has become a major topic in European football as the legendary goalkeeper approaches 40 years old and his contract with Bayern Munich only runs until the end of the 2025–26 season.
Joining Bayern from Schalke 04, Neuer has shared the position with various teammates. But whether veteran or young talent, no one has been able to take his starting spot. For over a decade, he has been regarded as the benchmark for the modern goalkeeper role, with exceptional situational awareness, attack initiation, and spatial control. However, age and prolonged injuries have made his future less certain than before.
In an interview with Sky Sports Germany, Neuer stated: "I want to take my time to consider this (retirement). The important thing is to ask myself how my body feels, my health condition, and whether continuing is still reasonable. I need a bit more time."
During the 2024–25 season, the veteran goalkeeper was sidelined for a total of 91 days due to muscle tears, broken ribs, and thigh injuries, missing 15 matches. This is a notable figure for a keeper known for his durability.
Euro 2024 also marked the end of Neuer’s international career with Germany. He exited at the quarterfinals after a controversial loss to Spain, marking his final appearance in the national team jersey. At Bayern Munich, he remains coach Vincent Kompany’s first choice, especially in the Champions League, where he continues to deliver consistent performances.
Still, with his contract nearing expiration and his 40th birthday approaching, it is completely understandable that Neuer is contemplating retirement. Despite his cautious approach, legendary Lothar Matthaus is more optimistic. The former German star shared: "I believe Neuer will stay at Bayern for another year if he avoids injury. And if Neuer maintains his form, that would be very beneficial for the club."
The future remains uncertain, but regardless of the decision, Manuel Neuer will remain one of the greatest icons of German football and Bayern Munich.
