Bundesliga's last-placed team Mainz 05 ended their cooperation with coach Bo Henriksen on Wednesday after going eight games without a victory, leaving them at the bottom of the Bundesliga standings.
On Sunday evening, sporting director Niko Bungert had already announced a thorough review of the dire situation and chose not to support coach Henriksen.
Following two days of intense discussions, it became evident that the heavy 0-4 loss at SC Freiburg, where Mainz 05 managed only one shot on target throughout the entire 90 minutes, was the final straw for the Danish coach.
The 50-year-old was removed from his role as head coach, with Under-23 coach Benjamin Hoffmann stepping in as interim trainer.
"Mainz 05 owes a lot to Bo Henriksen," said sporting director Christian Heidel in an official club statement. "In a seemingly hopeless situation, he united the club and the whole city, guiding us to safety with his compassionate and dedicated leadership, and even achieving promotion to the Conference League a year later."
"However, football always brings changes that require a sporting reorientation — although everyone involved gave their all to find solutions until the very end," Heidel reassured: "Together with Bo, we have come to the conclusion that we have reached such a point, even though the separation is truly painful."
Bo Henriksen successfully steered Mainz 05 clear of relegation during the 2023/24 season, a task he completed shortly after taking charge in February 2024.
