Flashscore had an exclusive conversation withSoumaila Coulibaly about his current season with Brest, his experience in the Bundesliga, and the top defenders he has played alongside.

How has your return to Brest been so far?

"Everything is going very well. I’m back where I was last year, so I already know the routines, I’m familiar with everyone at the club, and I feel very comfortable here."

Brest took some time to find their rhythm, but you’ve improved with two wins in your last two games. It seems the club remained calm and confident in its abilities.

"The squad changed a bit, with some players leaving and others joining. But we have brought in some really strong players, and the team had to adjust quickly. We did our best.

"I don’t think we were ever in a situation where we needed to panic about the standings. I believe we reacted well to keep progressing and giving our best effort."

Your first season at Brest was affected by a groin injury. Was it difficult to be part of the squad but unable to play much?

"I had an injury that lasted quite a while. Now, I feel great, which is why I can play match after match."

You are on loan from Strasbourg. Does that create any extra pressure?

"It’s a daily source of motivation. The truth is, at the end of the season, I know I’ll return to Strasbourg. But until then, I’m giving my all for Brest. We’ll see what happens afterward.

"Of course, every player wants to be on the pitch, and I’m no different. Brest is providing me that chance, and I’m very happy about it."

You have been at PSG, Borussia Dortmund, and Antwerp. What have you gained from your training and development at these clubs?

"I learned a lot from top defenders. These clubs helped me reach this level, including Strasbourg during my short time there, and of course Brest. I’m very thankful to them. I’m proud to have played for such teams."

If you had to choose the most influential defender you’ve played with, who would it be?

"I would say Mats Hummels. He’s a very relaxed and calm person. He often gave advice to younger players. He’s a great individual."

Do defensive playing styles differ by country?

"I mostly watched the Bundesliga since I only made one appearance there. But it’s clear that in Germany, teams play more openly compared to Ligue 1.

"Still, I believe both leagues demand a lot if you want to perform well. Gaining experience at various clubs is definitely a benefit. It keeps us grounded, working hard, and progressing."

Do you have any personal targets related to stats or data?

"No, I try to take it game by game, prepare properly, and enjoy playing with my teammates. Honestly, I don’t pay much attention to ratings like many players these days — that’s not my focus.

"I play my matches, review them with the staff or by myself to evaluate my performance. I don’t concentrate on stats or ratings."

If you maintain this winning streak, the top of the table won’t be far off. Does that give you full confidence heading into 2026?

"We have a strong squad, we aren’t setting any limits, and we’ll see where we stand at the end of the season."

Brest will face Monaco this Friday in Ligue 1.
