Diogo Dalot, signed by Mourinho while managing Manchester United, has become the squad’s second most experienced player after Luke Shaw. Yet, the 26-year-old Portugal international may depart Old Trafford, with reports suggesting club executives are planning to sell him in the upcoming year.

Dalot joined Manchester United in 2018 from Portuguese club Porto for £19 million (€22 million). Mourinho predicted he would be the team’s wing-back for the next decade. Although that timeframe might not be fulfilled, Dalot remains not only Mourinho’s sole remaining signing at the club but also the second longest-serving player at United.
He has played 224 matches for Manchester United across all competitions, not far behind Luke Shaw’s 300 appearances over 11 years. In recent seasons, Dalot has been one of the team’s “iron men,” rarely missing games.
Though primarily a right-back, the 26-year-old Dalot can operate on both flanks. Solskjaer even deployed him as a right winger. In the Champions League match where United overturned Paris Saint-Germain 3-1, Dalot, playing as a winger, scored a long-range shot that earned a penalty and contributed significantly to the stoppage-time winning goal.
Dalot’s attitude and spirit are often praised, but tactically he is considered insufficient for Amroli’s 3-4-3 system, showing inconsistent performances. Therefore, transfer expert Graeme Bailey from “TEAMtalk” states that Manchester United is contemplating selling Dalot, especially if they can recruit a new wing-back, to cash in on him.

Graeme Bailey explained: “Discussions about Dalot’s future are ongoing within Manchester United because the club is aware that some teams may be interested in this Portuguese international. It’s important to stress that Jason Wilcox and his management team are currently satisfied with Dalot’s performance, but they also know his contract runs until 2028, and a renewal could increase his wages. So, they are currently debating the player’s future.”
Dalot currently earns less than £100,000 per week at Manchester United, making him relatively affordable. His agent has already contacted the club to initiate renewal talks next year. However, if Amroli wants to sign another wing-back, the current options are already plentiful. Since Amroli took charge, he has signed left-backs Patrick Dogu and Diego Leno, as well as wing-backs Mazraoui and Harry Armas, and converted Amad Diallo into a right wing-back.
Among these players, those signed by Amroli are unlikely to be sold immediately; Amad is a definite starter. Therefore, if someone must be sold, Dalot might be the candidate. He has several potential suitors, including giants Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Atletico Madrid. Bailey’s report confirms: “Real Madrid is interested in signing Dalot in 2026.”
It is reported that Manchester United has learned Real Madrid sees Dalot as a successor to veteran Dani Carvajal. If he transfers to the Bernabeu, Dalot would reunite with former United wing-back Alvaro Fernandez Carreras.

This season, Manchester United also needs to address the futures of five players with expiring contracts: Maguire, Casemiro, Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, and Tom Heaton. Among them, Sancho and Malacia, part of the summer “five mice” group, are almost certain to leave when their contracts expire. Heaton may retire to become a coach, while Maguire and Casemiro are the two the club hopes to renew at lower wages. However, given their high earnings, especially “Fat Tiger” with a weekly wage of £350,000, it remains uncertain whether negotiations will make significant progress.
