Man United - Bournemouth: Mount is set to help MU overcome difficulties

Mason Mount is currently at his strongest and most precise stage since joining Manchester United (MU) in the summer of 2023. If he avoids injuries and maintains his recent high standard, Mount could be instrumental in helping MU overcome difficulties.

So far, Mount has scored 3 goals in 12 Premier League appearances, matching his total from the entire previous season. The 26-year-old midfielder’s goals have been impressive and have contributed to victories for coach Ruben Amorim’s team.

Versatile and in harmony with Bruno

Mount’s first goal was the opener in a 2-0 win over Sunderland. His second came during the match against Crystal Palace, where he helped MU complete a comeback at Selhurst Park. Recently, the former Chelsea player scored MU’s third goal in the 4-1 victory over Wolves.

Mount’s significance is evident in his synergy with Bruno Fernandes. Two of Mount’s three goals involved Bruno’s assists. A clever free-kick from MU’s captain created the chance for Mount to score against Crystal Palace. Their understanding continued in the Wolves match, with Fernandes’ pass perfectly timed to Mount’s run. “As soon as I saw Fernandes holding the ball with space to operate, I had to calculate my run. I thought I was very close to offside, but in reality, I wasn’t,” Mount explained.

Mount has played 584 minutes in the Premier League this season, ranking 13th among MU players in terms of minutes played. This exceeds his total minutes from the 2023-24 season (513) and is not far from the 621 minutes last season. He has started 6 matches this season, one more than last season and just two fewer than the season before. Without injuries, Mount could have started more games, as MU’s win rate significantly improves when he is on the field. The Portuguese coach considers Mount an essential player and is willing to use him in various roles. Against Crystal Palace, he was one of two attacking midfielders behind striker Zirkzee. In the win over Wolves, Mount was pushed up as a false nine.

Mount currently plays a crucial role at Manchester United

A pillar during Mbeumo’s absence

Mount’s versatility is vital as MU faces upcoming squad changes. Three in-form players at Old Trafford—Mazraoui, Mbeumo, and Diallo—will return to Africa for national team duties at the AFCON starting early next week. This will leave a large gap in MU’s lineup, especially in attack.

This is when Mount needs to reproduce the level of performance that made MU willing to pay £60 million to sign him from Chelsea in the summer of 2023. Coach Amorim has consistently praised his talent: “If you compare what Mount achieved at Chelsea, also as a left winger, he possesses excellent qualities both offensively and defensively. What we need to do is take good care of him, just like we did with Luke Shaw. Mount is very important to MU right now.” The Portuguese coach also mentioned other strengths of Mount related to his football intelligence, ability to circulate the ball at high speed, and the balance he brings whenever he is on the pitch.

Bournemouth, a team that has not won in their last six Premier League matches, will be a fitting opponent for Mount to continue his strong run at Old Trafford. Apart from his 3 goals, he has not yet provided an assist, but everyone knows it is only a matter of time. Mount excels in everything—from ball possession to off-ball movement, from combination play to dribbling, from scoring to assisting.

He fears only injuries.
