According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Serie A club Napoli has made progress in signing Manchester United's 20-year-old English midfielder, Coby Mayo, and they aim to finalize the deal in January. Mayo has agreed to join the Serie A defending champions, preferring Napoli despite having over ten other suitors.

Manchester United has yet to decide whether to let Mayo leave next month, but the player himself is not opposed to the move and can even be said to want the transfer. This season, he has not started any Premier League matches; all 11 appearances have been as a substitute.
Romano confirmed that Mayo is very eager to join Napoli next month, and this transfer plan is supported by his family and agent. "Mayo really, really wants to sign for Napoli. This transfer opportunity is very attractive to him personally, to his family, and Napoli also aligns with his agent’s wishes."
He added, "Therefore, they are currently prioritizing Napoli's offer, and they have noticed that last summer, when Mayo was potentially going out on loan, Napoli immediately showed great enthusiasm and strong interest. So now Mayo genuinely wants to join Napoli and prefers them over the other 10 to 12 competing clubs."
Premier League transfer expert Fraser Fletcher told TEAMtalk that Napoli has held multiple rounds of talks with Mayo’s agent and promised that coach Conte sees him as the final piece needed for Serie A defense and a Champions League push. Mayo has already expressed his willingness to move to Napoli.

However, Manchester United holds the final say on Mayo’s departure. Romano explained, "The issue is here; we are waiting for Manchester United’s response. We still need to wait; I have always said this is the crucial step. But in the past few days and hours, Napoli has continued to make progress in signing Mayo. Believe me, for such a talented player with many clubs interested, this progress is significant. Negotiations are ongoing, but from the player’s perspective, Napoli has taken a strong approach, and the progress is very smooth."
Before Manchester United’s match against Aston Villa, with Casemiro suspended, it was expected that Mayo might start. However, before the game, Amrabat announced Mayo would miss out due to a calf injury. Along with Bruno Fernandes’ injury afterward, this has been quite unfortunate for both Manchester United and Mayo.
Reports say Manchester United is increasingly dissatisfied with Mayo, mainly due to impatience from him and his agent. United has always believed he has great potential, but unfortunately, Mayo’s camp first demanded a high salary and then, upon losing a starting spot, only wanted to leave instead of actively adapting, blaming Amrabat for blocking his development.
Manchester United might temporarily need Mayo during Bruno Fernandes’ injury absence, but the 20-year-old English midfielder’s current injury could reduce his chances. Moreover, once Bruno Fernandes recovers, Mayo’s situation will likely revert to the original state.

In the long run, unless either Amrabat or Mayo completely changes — Amrabat adjusting the formation or Mayo altering his attitude — this Manchester United talent staying in January will only deepen divisions, such as the player falling out with the coach after missing England’s World Cup squad, rather than creating new opportunities.
