Viktor Gyokeres posted an unfortunate stat during Arsenal’s goalless draw with Liverpool in the 21st Premier League matchweek.
Arsenal and Liverpool ended in a 0–0 stalemate in the 21st round Premier League match held at Emirates Stadium. This was the first time Arsenal dropped points since their heavy defeat to Aston Villa last month. Nevertheless, Mikel Arteta’s side extended their lead at the top of the table to 6 points.
In this match, Viktor Gyokeres was positioned as the main striker, with Bukayo Saka returning to the starting lineup after being on the bench against Bournemouth. Leandro Trossard completed Arsenal’s attacking trio. However, neither Gyokeres nor Trossard made a significant impact in the final third, forcing Arteta to substitute both shortly after the hour mark.
Just minutes after the Swedish forward left the pitch, notable statistics emerged. According to Opta, Gyokeres had only 8 touches in 64 minutes against Liverpool. Remarkably, only one of those touches occurred inside the penalty area, and he had just a single touch in the entire second half before being substituted. This is the lowest number of touches Gyokeres has had in an official Arsenal match where he played at least 20 minutes.
On commentary, Gary Neville gave a harsh assessment of the Swedish striker’s performance. The Manchester United legend stated: "He was very invisible on the pitch, and that’s putting it mildly. He barely left any mark at all."
Up to now, Gyokeres has only scored 5 Premier League goals since joining Arsenal for £55 million from Sporting CP last summer. Clearly, the 1998-born star has yet to meet the expectations matching the transfer fee paid by the London club.
Before resuming the Premier League campaign, Arsenal will also compete in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, with away matches against Portsmouth and Chelsea respectively.
